ABJ criticizes Ohio Republicans’ assaults on abortion rights

Today’s issue of the Akron Beacon Journal contains an editorial against the efforts of Republican state legislators to curtail abortion rights.

The editorial came in response to the so-called heartbeat bill, introduced yesterday by Republicans in the Ohio state legislature, which would virtually outlaw abortion in Ohio.

According to ABC news, the bill would ban abortions once there is evidence that a fetus has a heartbeat, which can be detected as early as 18 days for some women, and by six weeks for most.

Republicans have two other bills in the works. One would ban late-term abortions at 20 weeks. Another would make it more difficult for a minor to obtain a juvenile court judge’s permission to get an abortion without parental consent.

“Republicans often grumble about government engaging in excess. In this instance, they would do well to heed their own words,” according to the Beacon Journal.
